What is stress?
Stress is a response to a
challenging situation. The word
‘Stress’ is defined as a ‘response
pattern to a demanding physical or
psychological situation’. The
sources of stress are both external
and internal. Unattended high
intensity acute stress episodes and
low intensity chronic stress leads
to compromised performance and
somatic [bodily] diseases which are
known as ‘stress related disorders’.
Am I likely to be stressed, as I
don’t really feel stressed?
One of the most vulnerable groups to
these negative outcomes of stress
are families where the husband and
wife work, or in families where one
partner works under stressful
conditions. On the surface,
everything looks glittering &
attractive, but beneath that lies an
unsettling world of long hours,
strict deadlines, sleep deprivation,
drop in physical activity, unholy
alliance between fat-laden foods of
convenience and vicious work stress
loop spiraling into an abyss of
stress related disorders, which you
may not even be aware of.
We don’t have to be sitting ducks to
stress, and wait for it to balloon
into a full life style disease,
because we do have the tools to
avert this! The solution is to equip
oneself with ‘better coping
strategies’ which results in a
mental state which is no longer in a
reactive state.
